Education

Post by appleton »

How well do you think Education is being taught in nations?

I would like to rewrite the whole curriculum for the U.K! I have spoken about these on my blog.

Too many people are leaving without any life skills. I can say I did too. More emphasis should be on life. Such as financing, budgeting, sex education, business, work skills etc.

Whats your thoughts?

well, i think we should consider the point of education (pre-college), to begin with, which has nothing to do with "life skills" or the individual, but with the "system" - it's training for the underclass

have you read "dumbing us down"?

That's what I was focusing on. School teaching isn't great. I know college in the U.K and U.S is different.

I think school here focuses too much on exams and the end results of those exams. They don't seem to care if the students come out and cannot function in society. This is why we have so many problems with people who cannot act responsibly.

I don't know how it is in the U.S perhaps you could give us a insight :)

The reason why exams are considered to be so important is because it's what employers are ultimately looking at. I guess the education system is there to prepare people for work, and most workplaces want qualifications of some kind.

But, agreed, financing etc would be pretty useful!

Examinations don't prepare you for work though. People still have a habit of being lazy with tons of qualifications to their name! This system doesn't prepare people for work. Certainly not the working environment, it prepares them for exams :)

Er, what happened to my post? I could have sworn I posted something in this thread a few days ago. I mentioned something about how it's the attitudes towards education that need to be changed rather than education itself. But the post seems to have deleted itself.

Er... I think I remember that post too.

It's not showing up in archives. Which means nobody manually deleted it. No clue what happened there.

lol, I think your right partly anyway. Most people here don't value their education much. I think both attitudes and the education system need to change.

There are sooooooo many problems in education. I could almost write a book on it!

I'll just touch on a few (and embed my opinion in each):

1. Here in the US I don't think the problem is that people do not value education, but rather they don't understand that the absolutely MUST change with each generation to meet the differing needs of the workplace and world in general.

2. Teaching methods should revolve around the way students learn, not the way in which the educator "wants" to teach.

3. I agree that students need more "life" education. Too many are going into the world with the knowledge to do complex mental operations, but without the knowledge required to do simple tasks. While teaching life skills used to be the job of the parents, it is increasingly becoming the job of educators as more and more parents are around less often.
