I think you have the right idea there Matt. If the US and/or Israel launches a Military attack against Iran it will instantly generate a lot of new, very determined and fearless enemies.

Frankly, I don't think attacking Iran would be a good choice. But would
not attacking Iran be a good choice? So many nations have developed nuclear weapons in practically plain sight while bluffing their way through and acting like nukes are the farthest thing that they intend to use. Iran is obviously doing the same thing. When they do get nukes I doubt they would have any compuction against launching them against Israel. No other Middle Eastern nation will take action against them for that, certainly, and the West will again look like a blumbering who-dun-it force who made the mistake of not attacking Iran.
It comes down to the old saying "bad if we do, bad if we don't." If the West doesn't stop Iran, I see nuclear tensions in the Middle East within ten years at most. If the West does stop Iran, no one will think that Iran was making nuclear weapons anyway and rail the West for attacking a harmless nation. If the West does not stop Iran, the foreign forces that are operating the insurgency in Iraq will continue to pour into the country and muddle our efforts to rebuild what has been torn down, making us look like blumbering idiots who started a war we can't finish. If the West does stop Iran and the foreign forces stop coming into Iraq through Iran, they will instead enter through Syria (as they are doing now) and the West will look foolish for attacking a nation that was not against Iraq anyway. Can the West find a way around this vicious circle of anti-Western thought? I don't know, I wish we could.

That is actually a very relevant point you make Luke. Many countries now have nuclear weapons. If Iran gets them (which they will if there is no intervention) what will they do with them. If they use just one they will be invaded the next day and they can't use them in their own country. Even if it launched one against Israel it is a possibility it could get shot down before it got there.
I just thought though; what abouts if Iran develops the technology and gives it to Hamas or Hezbollah? That would be a real blow. Iran would be "free" from doing anything and the terrorists so love dieing that they wouldn't care if it took 10,000 of their men to launch a nuke into Israel.
