Just wanting to know opinion on this news clip from across the pond.

Illinois gun laws are said to be among the strictest in the US.

Then what are the liberal laws? No laws at all perhaps?!

This bit made me laugh:

The licence includes a picture of a toothless Bubba and a squiggle that represents his best attempt at a signature.

Sounds pretty strict to me. In Kentucky we don't need a licence to own a gun. We just need one to carry concealed. The constitution gives us the right to own guns unless we lose that right in a court of law.

I see. I thought everyone would have to have a license to own a gun. The fact that anyone could get a gun easily and at any time not being part of the equation.

So I take it you see there is nothing wrong with giving children, even babies a license to own a gun.

There should be no "license" to start with. I got my first rifle when my great uncle passed away. I was ten. I still have it in my bedroom. Never had a problem or gave it a thought. This is to me like saying you need a "license" to have a butcher knife in your home. It is a tool. Too much about nothing to me.

A tool. I guess that is another way of looking at it - I take your point.

I think I end up looking at a gun as a (too) simple, but deadly effective killing machine. It just takes a combination of a loss of temper (even carelessness) and a slight squeeze of two fingers to take away someone's life, while almost any other method requires a great deal more action, proximity and determination.

I have always had access to guns. I was taught as a child that they were not toys. Just like sharp knives, scissors, and matches. I think that is why I have never been obsessed with them. It was always a big treat when one of my adult relatives took me out to shoot my very own gun. Having got it from my uncle, who I loved very much and spent lots of time with, I always took very good care of my old rifle. It is now over 80 years old. Looks and shoots just as it did in 1961. I still have some of his tools including his anvil. Respect for people, animals,guns, and tools was just part of my life growing up. As you can see, I may have outlived my time on this planet. Things were so simple then. Now you need a licence to do anything. To have a gun, to own a dog, to park your car on the street. We have a law here about how close you can build a house to the road. But you can go the the courthouse and get a "license' (permit) to build it right at the ditch for about 50 dollars. Oh please don't get me started on how we are all giving up our rights as people to autocrats who think they know better than we do what is good for us. When we give up any right what is the chance of ever getting it back?
